  • Vaccinations: Keep up with vaccinations to prevent infections, which can trigger sickle cell crises. Without the proper vaccinations, it’s easier to fall sick and be susceptible to different illnesses, health complications, and immunity breakdowns.

2. Hydration and Nutrition

  • Stay Hydrated: There is absolutely no way to manage sickle cell pain effectively without drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which can trigger pain crises and other complications.
  • Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps support overall health and prevent complications, and allows the cells do properly function. This is a key favor in thriving with sickle cell.

3. Exercise and Physical Activity

  • Stay Active: Engage in regular, moderate exercise to maintain physical fitness and improve overall well-being. Personally, i find stretching, walking, yoga, and mat pilates to be the least strenuous exercise for someone living with sickle cell. However, Consult your doctor about suitable activities.

  • Mental Health Support: Seek counseling or support groups if you’re struggling with the emotional aspects of living with SCD. Properly managing your overall health is a key factor in thriving with sickle cell, for warriors, it’s important to have a community of people you can reach out to for support.

  • Know Your Triggers: Identify and avoid personal pain triggers, such as extreme temperatures or stress.
  • Pain Management Plan: Develop and follow a comprehensive pain management plan with your healthcare provider.

  • Advocate for Yourself: Be proactive in your healthcare and advocate for the treatments and support you need. If you don’t speak up about your needs you lose out on proper pain management treatment.

8. Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Sleep: Ensure you get enough quality sleep to help your body recover and manage fatigue. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep a day can not only play a role in improving your overall health, but also aids in reducing pain episodes, improving immune support, increasing energy levels, and regulating blood flow and oxygen.
  • Avoid Triggers: Staying away from known triggers like cold weather, high altitudes, physical exertion, and dehydration. This is crucial for minimizing the severity of crises. Sometimes people can be a trigger so be sure to stay away from people and places that may trigger any unwanted energy.

  • Pursue Hobbies: Engage in hobbies and activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
  • Set Goals: Set personal and professional goals that inspire you and give you a sense of purpose.

10. Financial and Practical Support

  • Seek Financial Aid: Look into resources and organizations that offer financial assistance or support for medical expenses.
  • Plan for Emergencies: Have a plan for managing crises, including knowing where to go for emergency care and having necessary contacts readily available.
